The Honeymooners’ Prank

Erie County, NY
An attendant at a gas station at Union and Wehrle told police he spotted a note while filling the tank which said the woman in the vehicle was being kidnapped and the driver was passing her off as his wife. More than four hours later, Pennsylvania State Police confirmed the note was a prank created by the couple, who were honeymooners.

Cute “prank”. Kind of a serious subject to be joking around about, though. Not to mention the very real possibility of the husband getting beaten or shot by an over-zealous cop…

There was a story I read a while back about a bored kid in the back seat of his parents car who wrote a note saying “Help! I am being kidnapped” and displayed it in the car’s back window. I took quite an effort for the parents to straighten the situation out when they got pulled over by a state tropper.

This is a sad commentary on how far we’ve slipped as a society. The response of the attendant was right considering the gravity of the message in the note. The unfortunate thing is that, as pranksters, they were simply looking to get a reaction and the only way to get a reaction anymore is by declaring something very extraordinary. The “ordinary” meter has been redefined by the media and the legal system!

Remember the days when the woman would just give the attendant a peep show to see the reaction?
