The Bank’s Big Mistake
Grass Valley, CA
At 3:03 p.m., a caller from a bank on the 10000 block of Alta Sierra Drive reported a man came into the bank a few months ago to close his account. The man had the same name as another customer who had more money in his account. The bank made a mistake and closed the other person’s account and the man took the money.
The caller had been trying to get the man to return the money. The man has been cooperative and has said he would return the money, but he has not. An officer contacted the bank manager and left a message for the man to contact the bank.

Even the bank tellers are smoking the Valley’s Grass, I see. From what I see the bank owes the second fella some money (although in some places, the first guy would be arrested for theft).

I’m sure that cell phone that they’re calling will be left at the airport as soon as the “nouveau riche” dude spends cash on a ticket to the French Riveria via Switzerland to make a deposit.

You’re right, Mike. The bank does owe him money, that is what the FDIC is all about. It was originally conceived to protect people in the event of another Great Depression-like collapse, but insurance is insurance, and the bank won’t lose a dime on this. Pay the man his money, fire the bank teller who doesn’t know Joe from Blow, and make up the loss by selling some of the local “produce” through the drive-through window.

Can’t be a lot of money. Anyone with lots of money knows that the cops are not the right ones to get involved…the lawyers are. No, I think we are talking chump-change here and perhaps even an intentional scam on the part of the guy with the money. I mean, last time I took money out of the bank I had to provide a bank account number. How would one guy know the other guy’s bank account number?

Exactly Ironman. I mean, Both clients can’t have the Same name, the Same address, AND the Same Account number and PIN. Bank screwed up…..a few months ago to boot.
Sorry but I have to add this……………………………………….
G R A S S V A L L E Y *ding ding*. Poor place, a college town and IF you put ALL of the smarts in one cantainer, you’d still have lots of room in that thimble

You can have 2 clients with the exact same name, and some smaller town banks just ask for an ID. But when 2 names come up they should verify other information. Had it happen to me, what sucks is when the other goes on a check bouncing spree and ruins your good name!

Having worked in a bank, I know that, by law, once the money leaves the bank, there’s really nothing the bank can do to retrieve it,unless the person in question agrees to it.
For all the money raked in by customer charges, overdraft fees, stop pay fees, etc, it doesn’t hurt a financial institution to “eat” its mistakes once in a while. Might teach them to be a bit more humble.
