The Unforgiven
Columbia, SC
A 53-year-old woman withdrew $20 from a Bank of America ATM on Two Notch Road on June 30, and like many others, drove off leaving her card in the machine. Thankfully she realized her forgetfulness before she got very far and returned to the ATM, whereupon she saw a man in his early 20s take money from the machine, but noticed his card was still in his hand. The man gave the woman her card and $100 he had taken from her account. The woman wanted to prosecute him for attempted larceny.

How about they prosecute HER, for attempted stupidity?

You have got to be stupid to leave your card in the machine in the first place. Wonder if they followed through on her request?

How in the world can someone remember to take the measly twenty dollar bill and forget to take her card, which is (presumably) worth lots more? I’m reminded of one of my favorite John Barth lines: “The key to the treasure IS the treasure.”

I admit it. I can be flighty. I’ve forgotten my card. You’re in a hurry, you get your money and your head turns to the next item on your agenda. You turn to leave. Fortunately I’ve never driven off.
Still, if this ever happened to me, if I ever did, this would have left an impression on me. I’d never forget it again. As I tell my boys, all education comes with a cost but not all education occurs in the classroom.
