No Credit? No Money? No Problem!

Rio Grande, NM
2:10 p.m. — A Salazar Dodge employee called asking for help with a customer who was trying to leave without paying a $2,700 bill. The caller had closed the gate on the customer to keep him from leaving, but he was trying to ram it. Police advised the employee to file a civil complaint.

OK, like a guy comes in to check out a car–so even though he has no money you sell him a car and then tell him he can’t take it with him—-Talk about high pressure sales……Geesh!

I would be willing to believe that the bill was due to service. $2700 for a service bill at a dealership is SOP. Those folks know how to charge better than lawyers!

Let’s hold the customer to a little responsibility too. He shouldn’t have approved any services without getting an estimate, if such were the case. The dealer has to pay the parts folks, and accounts receivable/payable folks, and mechanics, etc. The owner is going to have to lose time and money forcing this guy to pay his bill. The cost of which will all be passed on to you and me.

Whether or not he planned on paying the bill, the dealership’s attempt to detain him could easily be construed as kidnapping or false arrest. Both VERY actionable in civil court. The dealership could end up owing the customer a few thou…. Which would also be passed on to you and me. Well, not me because I can screw up, err- I mean fix- my own car just as good as the dealer, and it costs a whole bunch less.
