WWF in the Dog Park

Point Reyes Station, CA
A senior citizen tied up his small dog while at the Farmer’s Market, only to have a big dog attack it. Bystanders broke up the dogfight, but by then the small dog was tangled in its leash. When one of the bystanders tried to untangle the dog, its owner body-slammed her, she told deputies. The woman declined to press charges but said she doesn’t want it to happen again.

    Im wasn’t sure until now why the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) sued the WWF (World Wrestling Federation) over the name, or the initials really. Now it all makes sense, some people just take wildlife/pets rather seriously.

    What defines a “body slam” between Senior Citizens? An actual pro wrestling move or a head on collision between two motorized scooters?

    Here are some suggestions if approached by an aggressive dog:

    * Don’t make direct hard eye contact. Body language counts
    * Turn sideways, giving a calming signal. DO NOT RUN.
    * Keep your arms and hands down and tight by your side

    The following defensive tools may work on some dogs:

    * Air horn
    * Where legal, pepper spray
    * Direct Stop is a Citronella spray (available at PetSmart and PetCo
    * Defendabrella - a small tote umbrella to suddenly pop open to scare the dog
    * Having a “sacraficial” garment (old shirt, sweater) around your waist to offer up to the dog instead of you.
    * Always carry your cell phone and call for help if you can.

    A Tired Dog is a Happy Dog!!
