Gotta Watch My Stories
Grassy Valley, CA
At 6:47 p.m., a woman called 911 from the 50 block of Candy Lane and hung up on the operator. When she was called back, the woman said her television set was not working and she did not know who to call. She was told how to contact the local cable company.

It’s amazing what people consider to be an “emergency”. I work for a utility company that takes call for “emergencies” such as a gas leak, a downed power line, etc. People will call the emergency line because they have a utility bill that seems too high or because they can’t find their account number. When we remind them that they’ve reached an emergency line ( think “life threatening situation”), they usually get defensive about their reason for calling. Meanwhile. a true emergency call will be delayed because someone thinks there nothing in life more important than that 36 cent late pay charge.

I hear you Berlincoln, It never ceases to amaze me how inconsiderate some people can be to call an emergency line because your TV is’t working is just plain stupid! There should be a charge for people tying up emergency lines!!!

Most places DO have laws against tying up emergency lines with non-emergencies. Unfortunately they are almost never enforced. On the other side of the coin, some places (like Washtenaw County, Michigan) have all but eliminated non-emergency numbers (if you do find the non -emergency #, it goes to the 911 switchboard anyway). So this would be difficult to enforce. Until “cranio-rectumitis” can be eradicated, poorly designed systems and less than bright people will continue to be a problem.
