they probably refused to show their ID, that would be my guess. I’m surprised they weren‚Äôt hiding a crack pipe too.

Sounds like a clever scam, but not so well thought out.
While one person distracts the owners attention, the other person goes thru their things looking for valuables. But first, you have to get in! lol
