The No Show
Mukilteo, WA
Well over 150 people assembled at the Lighthouse Park near closing time expecting to see a fireworks show. The subjects had apparently misread a recent newspaper article discussing funding for the upcoming Lighthouse Festival fireworks show and thought it was tonight. Several people were upset and verbal with officers when it was explained to them that there would be no show and that the park was closed.

If over 150 people misread the article maybe they need to give reading comprehension classes….I wonder if that would fall under the “no child left behind” program

If over 150 people misread the article, it must not have clearly stated the facts of the case. I have noticed a decline in the clarity and grammatic uasge in print media, lately (especially newspapers where I am frequently galled by the rife appearance of homophones which are spelled correctly but are not the write word for the context of the article). Are editors being replace by MS Word sepll and grammar checkers? If so it’s a bad thing as these utilities cannot properly correct grammar, and cannot distinguish between words which are improperly used.

I’ve noticed the same thing too Mike, but I’ve also noticed newscasters having many grammatical errors and such. (Cute your using write in place of right to prove your point ^5)

And if I see “who” used in the objective case, instead of “whom,” 1 more flippin’ time I think I’ll scream

In my little corner of the world — whereever that corner may be — people quickly learn to use ALL proper forms of the English language. I’ve corrected newspapers (in red, of course) and sent them back. Last year, I returned a school district survey literally covered in red ink. When asked if I was going to return it like that, I said, “NO………………..I have to sign it first.”

And all those misused and abused apostrophes. Or is it apostrophe’s? I stopped correcting them a long time ago…ignorant bastards…

I, too, used to get bent out of shape by people’s writing errors, but now I just sit back and enjoy/marvel at them. For a really witty take on a not-so-funny phenomenon, read “Eats, Shoots & Leaves” by Lynne Truss. She gets her pedantic point across by ranting in a most adorable way.
