Deadbeat Dad (and Mom)
Bozeman, MT
A caller wanted to know the minimum amount of heat, electricity and phone service she and her ex-husband could provide to their kids. The woman was warned not to endanger her children’s welfare.

The cops aren’t listening. If the woman didn’t care about the children’s welfare, she wouldn’t have made the call. Duh!

I work for a utility company. It’s amazing how people will “forget” to pay their bills, then when they’re cut for nonpay, they’ll call screaming about all their “babies” on nebulizers and how cruel we are to shut off their power. While some these people are screaming at me on their CELL phones, they’re also puffing on cigarettes, and many technicians can tell you that they’re met at the meter or door by people with extensive tattooing, piercings, and elaborate artificial nails. Gone are the days when parents truly sacrificed for their children. We’re the “bad guys” because they budgeted for their personal “wants” but not for the basics, including heat and light.

BTW, I’m a smoker myself. So don’t start on me. But I would rather have electricity than fancy fingernails, and that great tattoo I’d love to have costs about the same as one month’s winter gas bill. (Still haven’t got a tattoo—I’d rather be warm than trendy)

Ber, Interesting that you point out the money factor and smoking…My son just brought home a slider that calculates how much it costs to smoke ( I quit Jan 24 2006, haven’t smoked since, nor have the desire
) Smoking 1 pack a day for one month, the average amout you pay is $135.00 Your right, that is a gas bill, or electric bill. If someone lived in Canada, it would be about $180.00 a month.
But not hearing the whole story, could be she is on a tight budget, Or maybe they have kids that waste energy or something. We have a friend who is taking care of her teenage nephews, and they will turn every light in the house on, and have been kown to turn on the air conditioning/and or heat high blast and open all the doors, out of spite. She has had bills upwards of $400.00 She doesn’t smoke or have tattoo’s she is a school teacher. They might be wanting to prove a point to the kids.
