The Rental Robbers

Posted on July 11th, 2007

Cincinnati, OH
Alvin Chambers and Steven Turner, police say, take their jobs very seriously.

Chambers, 24, of South Fairmount, and Turner, 21, of East Price Hill, work for Aaron’s Rental Company and deliver and pick up televisions and other items rented by customers.

But when a 42-inch plasma television was mistakenly dropped off at Juanita Carter’s home in East Price Hill, police say Chambers and Turner decided to get it back – even if no one was home.

The pair, police said, was at her Morrow Place home at 6:55 p.m. Wednesday when they knocked on the front door. There was no answer.

Police said the two went to the side of the house, took an air conditioning unit out of the window and entered the home to retrieve the television.

Chambers and Turner were arrested and charged with burglary.

Both were released today on their own recognizance.

Olmstead Falls, OH
A Grist Mill Court woman called police on June 16 to report that her condo was broken into.

She told police that when she came home from work she found a six-foot aluminum ladder in her garage, but doesn’t own a ladder. Inside the condo, the oven timer was going off and the DVD player was on.

Nothing was reported missing.

Police responded to the residence and were advised that there is a maintenance person that works for the condo association but he should not have keys to the garages.

The resident was told to leave the ladder where it is and see if someone comes back for it.

The Fraud That Fell Flat

Posted on June 1st, 2007

Rutland, VT
Louis Stevens and and Francis Fredette were trying to burglarize a Mobil convenience store in Randolph on Nov. 19, 2000, when Fredette, 40, of North Clarendon, fell off the roof, seriously injuring his back. The two then drove 40 miles to Fredette’s apartment, where they allegedly placed him at the bottom of an exterior staircase and pretended he had fallen, prosecutors said.

“That night, (Fredette) decided to make it appear that his injuries occurred at a different location so he could file a fraudulent personal injury lawsuit to recover money for his injuries,” according to Fredette’s indictment.

Fredette won a $700,000 insurance settlement over the fall after filing suit against his landlord and the owners of the property.

Fredette, who has pleaded innocent to fraud, faces up to 40 years in prison and a $2 million fine if convicted. His indictment calls for the forfeiture of a home he bought with the proceeds of the settlement.
